In 2003 CFWW's Donna Lero was named Jarislowsky Chair in Families and Work.
The Chair was endowed by the Jarislowsky Foundation, which was established by Canadian businessman and philanthropist, Stephen A. Jarislowsky. Mr. Jarislowsky is co-founder of Jarislowsky Fraser, one of Canada's largest private investment counseling firms. The Foundation has contributed to numerous initiatives in health, science, the arts and education including the endowment of (to this date) eleven academic chairs at Canadian universities in disciplines ranging from Business Administration and Public Sector Management to Environment and Health and History.
In 2003, the Foundation endowed the Jarislowsky Chair in Families and Work at the University of Guelph, the first academic chair in Canada to address the healthy integration of work and family responsibilities as critical economic and social policy issues. The endowment has enabled Dr. Lero and CFWW to implement and expand a rigorous and policy-relevant program of research in the area of workplace policies and family supports, to develop courses and instructional resources and to promote best practices in private, public and non-profit sectors. The academic chairship has also helped CFWW to increase public awareness of it's work, Lero says. "The contributions of Jarislowsky Foundation dovetail with other investments to increase the capacity of the Centre for Families, Work and Well-Being to function as the premier facility for such work in Canada."
CFWW thanks the Jarislowsky Foundation for its ongoing support and for helping to sustain work and family balance as an important domain of academic and policy work.
